Robinhood Raises $50 Million and Reveals Plans for Expansion to Australia

Dedicated to providing free access to the financial markets and inspiring a new generation of investors, Robinhood is thrilled to announce a $50 million round of funding led by New Enterprise Associates (NEA). Existing investors Index Ventures, Ribbit Capital and Social Leverage joined the round, along with new investor Vaizra Investments, bringing our total funding to date to $66 million.

We’re pleased to welcome NEA General Partner Kittu Kolluri, to the Board of Directors, which includes Index Ventures’ Jan Hammer and Robinhood’s founders, Vlad Tenev and Baiju Bhatt. Kolluri is a brilliant operator, well-known for leading Healtheon/WebMD in the ’90s and Neoteris in the ’00s.

In addition to enabling us to grow our team and support more platforms and brokerage features, this new capital will fuel international expansion so that one day, everyone will have the opportunity to experience Robinhood. Today, we’re announcing Australia as our first international market. Robinhood will soon begin the regulatory approval process and announce timing of the launch later this year. Australians may sign up for a waitlist and progress updates at robinhood.com/au.

Since our December launch, hundreds of thousands of people have joined Robinhood, with 25% of them being first-time investors. Collectively, our community has saved over $12 million in commissions and transacted over $500 million through our platform. Robinhood for iPhone continues to top the Finance charts and our Apple Watch app is already receiving praise.

We remain supremely focused on crafting a singular customer experience and couldn’t be more excited about our trajectory. Margin accounts, more asset classes, and our special Android app will all debut this year!

Cheers!

Introducing Robinhood for Apple Watch

From the beginning, Robinhood set out to create an engaging, more personal way to manage your finances. We designed mobile first, sprinkled in nifty design features like swiping to trade, and embraced color to effortlessly display market hours and market moves.

Today, we’re proud to announce Robinhood for Apple Watch. Checking your performance and peeking at your watchlist is now more accessible than ever. You can even make investments straight from the app and view a tiny countdown until market close. Isn’t that dandy?

Always at the forefront of technology, creating an Apple Watch app was a logical next step for us. We hope the app is a natural extension of the experience you’re familiar with on iPhone.

Earlier this week, we added support for new order types on Robinhood for iPhone. In addition to market and limit orders, you may now select stop loss, stop limit, and good till canceled order types.

Android friends, we haven’t forgotten about you! We look forward to sharing a unique Android experience with you this year. Request access to our beta if you haven’t already!

Cheers!

Welcome to Sherwood Forest!

(Left to Right) Back row: Aravind, Dan, & Hongxia. Front row: Arpan, Curran, Hannah, Chris, Scott, & Michael. Not pictured: Olympia & Ask Solem.

There are plenty of new faces here at Sherwood Forest, Robinhood’s humble home in sunny Palo Alto, CA. Since January, nine brilliant humans have joined our team and more are joining soon. They come from places like Pandora, Fitbit, Lightspeed Trading, Tumblr, and TD Ameritrade.

Aravind runs operations engineering at Robinhood. He brings extensive ops and systems experience from Tumblr, StumbleUpon, and Mozilla. Aravind makes sure deployment is a breeze, and that our bits are moving around reliably.

Previously on the Android team at Pandora, Dan is leading the development of Robinhood’s Android experience, launching this year. This might be obvious from the six Android devices that rest on his desk.

Curran recently joined our backend engineering team after completing his M.S. at Stanford. He spent summers at Facebook and Salesforce, and conducted research on neural nets and microfluidics.

Hailing from Fitbit, Hannah brings a passion for the customer experience to Robinhood’s Client Services team. She’s working on her Ripstik skills -- a Robinhood rite of passage.

Scott joined our Brokerage Operations team from Lightspeed Trading in NYC. He takes great pride in ringing our bell at market close, and holds the Robinhood record for fastest employee onboarding.

After recently graduating from Michigan and interning at 8Tracks and Amazon, Chris joined our iOS team. He wore a Robin Hood cap with a feather on his first day of work.

Michael joined our brokerage ops team from the Margin Risk department at TD Ameritrade. He brings a deep knowledge of the brokerage business and delights our customers with his Texas charm.

Hongxia joined us full-time after completing his M.S. at Stanford. He is the proud recipient of our “most experienced new grad” award, having interned at Google X, Asana, Palantir, and twice at Microsoft.

Our most recent engineering hire, Arpan, built Zaraya, the first-ever course management platform for Indian colleges. Not to be outdone by his roommate Hongxia, Arpan held internships at Google, Fitbit, Microsoft, and Tesla while completing his B.S. and M.S. at Stanford.

Olympia is starting soon at Robinhood as our new office manager. She joins us from TuneIn, and brings an eye for design and a passion for the employee experience. We’re excited for her to help create an amazing working environment for our growing team.

Ask Solem is the creator of Celery, a hugely popular distributed task queue that powers Instagram, Pinterest, and of course, Robinhood. With over a decade of engineering experience at companies like Pivotal Labs, VMWare, and Opera, we look forward to having him join us full-time soon.

If you like what we’re up to and want to join our team, check out our openings! We’re hiring Software Engineers (Android, iOS, Web, Backend), Designers, and a Compliance Analyst.

Cheers!

Start Investing. Stop Paying.

Robinhood Launches to the Public

Robinhood is now available to the public! Now that we’ve invited all 800,000 people who signed up for our waitlist, it’s your turn. So grab your iPhone, download Robinhood, and say goodbye to trading commissions.

In 2013, our unconventional brokerage sprouted up in Palo Alto, California, and we called it Robinhood. Committed to making the markets accessible to younger investors, we eliminated trading commissions and account minimums.

Pundits were outraged, arguing that younger people would never invest and that there wasn’t a market. They said we'd fall on our faces before we even made a trade.* But people disagreed -- nearly a million people. And today, we’re open to the public.

In just a few short months, our customers have collectively saved $5 million in commissions* and more than $212 million has been traded through Robinhood’s platform. While these numbers are impressive, we’re even more proud that 25 percent of our customers chose Robinhood as their first investment account.

Robinhood for Android

We’re hard at work building a unique experience for Android and look forward to sharing it with you all later this year. In the meantime, add your email to get the latest updates.

This is just the beginning of what’s to come. Margin accounts, additional order types and securities, API access and more are all on the docket for 2015.

Cheers!
