Resources to Guide Your Financial Journey

At Robinhood, we believe financial information should be accessible to the next generation of investors. Robinhood Learn is one resource we offer that provides easily-digestible information on the basics of investing, market trends, and financial terms.

With a group of experienced writers and editors who formerly reported on finance and market trends at publications such as Forbes and Quartz, we’ve published over 650 articles so far to help you make sense of investing lingo and trends. Commitments to Improving our Options Offering

Founder-Letter_02.png

On Saturday, we learned that Alex Kearns, a Robinhood customer, died by suicide and left a note citing confusion with our product. We quickly reached out to Alex’s family to share our condolences and offer to speak. We are personally devastated by this tragedy.

Over the past week, our team at Robinhood has been focused on identifying how we can improve Robinhood’s customer experience, specifically around our option flows involving multi-leg exercise and assignment. We want to share with you today what we are committing to as a company moving forward:

  1. Eligibility: We are considering additional criteria and education for customers seeking level 3 options authorization to help ensure customers understand more sophisticated options trading.

  2. Educational resources: We are expanding our educational content related to options trading. We have added information on early options assignments to our help center and we will be hiring an Options Education Specialist to further enhance education related to our options offering.

  3. User Interface: In the near term, we are rolling out improvements to in-app messages and emails we send customers about their multi-leg options spreads. We are also adding detail to the in-app history page to help users understand the mechanics of early options assignments. We are also working on changes to our user interface, including the way buying power is displayed. These changes will take a bit of time to roll out, but our teams are hard at work.

While we recognize that nothing can ease the pain that Alex’s family is feeling now, in addition to the steps above, Robinhood is making a $250,000 donation to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. If you or anyone you know is in crisis, please reach out for help

It is not lost upon us that our company and our service have become synonymous with retail investing in America, and that this has led to millions of new investors making their first investments through Robinhood. We recognize this profound responsibility, and we don't take it lightly. Our aspiration is to innovate, lead, and go beyond the status quo.

We remain ever committed to providing the best investing experience as well as the resources customers need to get and stay informed.

Dan Gallagher, Robinhood Board Member and Former SEC Commissioner, Joins Robinhood as Chief Legal Officer

Gallagher_Dan.jpg

Today, we’re thrilled to announce that Dan Gallagher will be joining Robinhood as Chief Legal Officer. Dan is a familiar face here at Robinhood after joining our Board of Directors in October 2019, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome him into this new role. Dan will oversee all global legal functions including corporate counsel, regulatory counsel, and product counsel.

“As a Board member, I've had the opportunity to work closely with the incredible people at Robinhood driving the company's mission forward and I'm excited to contribute even more directly in my new capacity as Chief Legal Officer”, said Dan. “I look forward to doing my part to help Robinhood reach even greater heights in serving its customers. I will miss WilmerHale, but I know I will stay close to all of my friends there.”

In addition to his position on Robinhood’s Board of Directors, Dan Gallagher was most recently partner and deputy chair of the securities department at the international law firm WilmerHale. He served as a SEC Commissioner from 2011 to 2015 and held several other positions on the SEC staff prior to being appointed commissioner, including deputy director and co-acting director of the division of trading and markets. Dan also brings significant experience developing and building legal organizations, including serving as Chief Legal Officer at Mylan NV from 2017 to 2019.

Dan will serve on our executive leadership team, which includes Co-Founders and Co-CEOs Vlad Tenev and Baiju Bhatt, Chief Operating Officer Gretchen Howard, and Chief Financial Officer Jason Warnick.

Dan is replacing Anne Hoge, our current Chief Legal Officer, who is leaving Robinhood later this month to attend to an illness in the family which is requiring more of her energy. We’ve been incredibly fortunate to have Anne as part of our leadership team, and she will be working with Dan over the coming weeks to ensure a smooth transition period for the company and the legal organization. We’ll also be working to add an independent board member to fill the current vacancy on Robinhood’s Board of Directors.

Congratulations, Dan! We’re excited for all the contributions you’ll continue to make in this new role.

Robinhood Raises $280 Million in Series F Funding Led by Sequoia

Blog Header.png

Today, we’re announcing a $280 million Series F funding at an $8.3 billion valuation. The round was led by existing investor Sequoia Capital, with participation from existing and new investors including NEA, Ribbit Capital, 9Yards Capital, and Unusual Ventures.

Amid challenging times and market volatility, we’re humbled that people are turning to Robinhood to participate in the markets and build their financial future. We added more than three million funded accounts so far this year, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to serve each customer. We’re also proud to have built a platform that empowers people: Half of new Robinhood customers this year were first-time investors.

As more people choose Robinhood, we remain focused on continuously improving the experience we provide. With this funding, we’ll continue to invest in scaling our platform, building new products, and accelerating build-out of our operations. That means hiring more top talent across all of our offices, including our newest office in Denver.

“Robinhood has made the financial markets accessible to the masses, and in turn, revolutionized the decades-old brokerage industry,” said Andrew Reed, partner at Sequoia. “We’re excited to further our relationship with Robinhood, which we believe is at the beginning of its opportunity.”

Thank you to all of our customers for being on this journey with us. We’ll keep working hard to make Robinhood even better.

Update on July 13, 2020: We’re pleased to share that we’ve raised an additional $320 million in subsequent closings, bringing our total for the round to $600 million. The new funding comes from new and existing investors, including TSG Consumer Partners and IVP, and brings our post-money valuation to $8.6 billion.
